PDF to EPUB

Open a PDF and get an EPUB you can read comfortably on an e-reader or phone. The text is rebuilt into paragraphs and chapters, headers and page numbers are removed, and the PDF bookmarks become the table of contents.

Working…

Your PDF stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to PDF to EPUB

  1. Choose or drop a PDF file. The tool checks whether it contains selectable text.
  2. Check the title and author, then pick the mode, images, cover and image quality.
  3. Click "Download EPUB".

Frequently asked questions

My PDF is scanned. Why is there a warning?

A scanned PDF only contains pictures of pages, not text, so there is nothing to reflow. First turn it into text with Make PDF Searchable or Image to Text (OCR), then convert the result here. If you just want to read the pages as they are, choose the "Page images (fixed layout)" mode. When only some pages have no text, the tool lists them.

What is the difference between the two modes?

"Reflowing text" rebuilds the text so it adapts to any screen and font size; it suits books, reports and articles. "Page images (fixed layout)" puts every page into the EPUB as a picture, exactly as it looks; it suits comics, magazines, scans and complex layouts, but the text cannot be resized or searched.

How are chapters made?

If the PDF has bookmarks, they become the chapters and the table of contents. Otherwise large headings start new chapters. If neither exists, a new chapter starts every 10 pages.

Will the EPUB look exactly like the PDF?

Not exactly; reflowing text adapts to your reader instead. The tool reads pages with one to four columns, headlines spanning columns and side boxes in a sensible order, joins lines into paragraphs (also across columns and pages), repairs words split with a hyphen, turns tables into real tables (also when they continue on the next page) and makes footnotes clickable notes at the end of each chapter. Repeated headers, footers and page numbers are dropped. Very complex layouts such as magazines may still come out in the wrong order; for those, the fixed layout mode or PDF to Word (Beta) is the better choice.

Which readers can open the file?

The result is a standard EPUB 3 file with an EPUB 2 table of contents for older devices. It opens in Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Calibre, Thorium and most e-reader apps. Kindle users can send it with "Send to Kindle". To turn an EPUB back into a PDF, use EPUB to PDF.

Are there limits? Is my file uploaded?

PDFs up to about 300 MB and 2,000 pages are supported, and very image-heavy books are capped to keep your browser responsive. Nothing is uploaded: the PDF is read and the EPUB is built in your browser, and you can stop at any time with "Cancel".
